AMFC Group 4 Round 4

RUTLAND WATER 22nd - 23Rd July 2011

Practice day started off with near perfect conditions for fishing but the Int was telling us that Rutland hadn’t been fishing well over the past few weeks so we had a bit of breakfast and banged our heads together to work out a plan.  We split up in the morning and David and I headed for Buoy 18 by spud bay to drift across to the sailing club bay. Andy D and Al headed into the basin area to check out int that there were fish everywhere in the basin. Kitch who had volunteered to come along to help out with practice started a drift by Buoy 19 at Hinman’s Spinney and was straight into 3 fish on the bounce. The Method – Fast Glass 2 blobs 10’ apart, (the man is a fish magnet) happy with the method I tried other various lines and flies to give us a back up but nothing was doing. David and I then moved down into the basin and tried the Dam wall area drifting onto Fantasy Island where I had some interest fishing a Sweep3 with boobies and blobs and David had some interest fishing nymphs close to Fantasies. Stopping for lunch I then moved into Kitches boat as David was leaving early I moved up onto a slow glass with 2 blobs and fished it slowly and I was straight into fish. So from practice we found that the fish were taking blobs but not a lot else mostly fished slow but could be coaxed into taking at speed.

Match day and the weather was top notch but we knew the day was going to be a grind just as it was the day before. As the match kicked off 9 of the 12 boat headed in 1 direction and all ended up between 18 and 19 buoy after a bit of shunting about due to some dodgy drifting going on. I looked around and seen 4 other red caps around me and promptly told my boat partner we’re moving, I’m not having all my eggs in one basket and headed for the Dam. After a bit of drifting and watching what else was going on about me( looking for any movement of fish not monging it) my line locked up and I was in, I had my first fish in the boat after about an hour on the water and thought that’s me cracked it, how wrong was I!! The rest of the day was woven with tragedy for myself as I was the recipient of plenty Parcel force hits (1 knock and they bugger off) and anything I locked up on promptly spat the hook back at me. Fergie was drifting from around Y buoy to W Buoy and on to the bank as was David and Col and then later Andy joined the pack. David and Col had plenty of action and had 4 and 5 fish to the boat but as for Andy Fergie and I we all had more fish on and lost than I’d care to think about. Fergie had a double shooter at one point and lost both fish.  But that just sums up how difficult it was on the day, it felt like the fish were just nipping at the flies and not really committing to the take.

On a positive note;

  1. All the areas that we had confirmed in practice held fish and produced some fish for the team.
  2. All the methods practiced on practice day produced the goods on match day.
  3. Communication between the boats was great, passing on information on drifts and keeping each other up to date on fish caught.
  4. We used int from the other BP’s to locate fish and confirm our areas early on in the match.
  5. No matter how many fish dropped off, the team still kept plugging away and wouldn’t give up.

Some great angling from some of the guys on such a tough day;
Col had 5 fish for 11lbs
Peter had 5 fish for 10lbs15oz
Andy had 4 fish for 8lbs
David had 4 fish for 7lbs 8oz
Jim had 1 fish for 3lbs 9oz
Fergie had 1 fish for 2lbs 5oz
Trust us Jocks to have a howler on match day!

Also for the first time in the club's history we have a member of the English National Rivers team in our ranks, well done Graham Lumsden.
