The Tequila Blob

One of the most effective flies in any competition anglers’ arsenal is the blob. It is a simple fly to tie and should be one of the first flies to attempt when learning.

The first thing about a blob is that it is quite a bulky fly you need to select the right kind of hook for the fly to work well. I am using a hayabusa size 8 it has a nice wide gape.  This leaves plenty of room for the hook point to be exposed to the fish.

I am using orange thread for this one but some prefer different colours. I have cast the thread onto the hook. It does not have to be pretty it’s soon to be covered in fritz.

For the tail I am using UV flash attack, you can use whatever floats your boat though. I have had success on flies with pink and orange tails. Some prefer to have no tails it is up to personal preference.

Select the two types of fritz that you are going to use, I am using orange and yellow a top tip is to wet the fritz this will make it easier to work with on the hook. Clear some of the fritz away so you have some part of the core free to attach the fritz to the hook.

Once you have wrapped the first part of the fritz and secured it to the shank of the hook select the second piece of fritz and repeat the process.

You need to leave around an 1/8 of an inch at the eye of the hook so that you can finish the fly off at the head.

Once complete varnish your head, I use hard as nails and just give it one coat.

The finished article go catch some fish.
