The Candy Floss Booby

This fly has had it's day more than once and is usually on my cast when fishing a team of nymphs. I like to fish this on the top dropper as it can bring fish to the flies. Quite often they will turn and take much drabber patterns.

The fly is tied on a Kamasan B175 size 14 the reason that it is smaller than normal is that I can fish this in the upper layers longer than a size 10 that would sink much quicker. for tying I am using Glo-Bright number four so some care is needed while tying.

I have tied in some brown cock hackles for the tail, I will then remove the excess with a pair of snips.

Tie in the body material (a single strand of natural peacock herl) and the rib. I am using gold wire because it was to hand I prefer copper to be honest.

Wrap the herl using touching turns around the hook and secure it an just short of the eye of the hook.

You can now bring your rib up the body try and keep iot evenly spaced. Secure the rib material and disgard the excess.

Tying in the beard can be quite tricky, I usually wrap to loose holding turns over the cock hackle adjust where I want it to sit and then wrap a few securing turns to hold it in place before trimming the excess.

Build the head of the fly and give it a touch of varnish. You can leave it like this and it will serve a purpose..........

Or you can get a pencil rubber and take some of the fuzz of the top of the fly I find that this gives a much more bug like look and prefer mine like this.

Four of our members are involved in International events this year. Congratulations to Andy Croucher, Paul Kitchen (England) and Jock Kettles (Scotland) on their Loch  Style Caps. Also for the first time in the clubs history we have a member of the English National Rivers team in our ranks, well done Graham Lumsden.
