The Candy Floss Booby

If I had to fish with only one fly all year round this would be the fly. Its killed more fish than John West. It is time consuming and I usually tie a supply that will see me through the season. There are now lots of variations to the original but this is the one I reach for when the going gets tough. Known in Scotland as Kettles Candy (lol) sorry private joke.

The first thing to do when tying up job lots of boobies is to prepare all your eyes, I will explain how to do this in a separate step by step. The eyes for this fly are yellow.

I use a Kamasan B160 hook size 8 I like the lighter qualities in this hook and it has a good gape which I also like on my booby patterns. The thread is very important on this fly as you will see later. I use ‘Fire Orange’ for the whole fly. Touching turns are important for this fly so keep it neat.

Tie in a mix of baby pink marabou and white marabou as a tail, once this is in place you can attach a piece of pearl tinsel at the end of the body.

Wrap the tinsel up the body try not to overlap too much as we want the fire orange thread to come through the tinsel.

Once this is done you can place your wing again this is a mix of baby pink and white marabou.

You can find loads of different ways of attaching the eyes to a fly I simply turn the vice so that I am facing the eye of the hook then lash the eyes on. The key with boobies and most flies for that matter is leaving enough room to finish the fly.

Once completed with a half hitch I put a drop of super glue between the booby eyes to secure the head of the fly. If you can’t catch fish with this take up golf!

Four of our members are involved in International events this year. Congratulations to Andy Croucher, Paul Kitchen (England) and Jock Kettles (Scotland) on their Loch  Style Caps. Also for the first time in the clubs history we have a member of the English National Rivers team in our ranks, well done Graham Lumsden.
