The Soldier Palmers

My thanks to Bob for the last few years where he has fulfilled the role as our Chairman and I trust he will continue to support the Federation as an Associate member.   I feel privileged to be taking up the Chairmanship at a time when the Federation is being so strongly supported by so many dedicated, enthusiastic and capable anglers.  This was clearly evident at the recent Spring match where the Federation’s more able members really went that ‘extra mile’ to help develop the newer / less experienced anglers; it really was an excellent and well supported match and my thanks go out to all who were involved in its organisation and to the many members who participated.

For those of you who were unable to attend the Federation’s recent Annual General Meeting, I will just reiterate the direction that I wish to see the Federation follow.  Unsurprisingly there is no change from the direction provided by Bob in his New Year message.   Our main effort is to win the Inter-Services and all that we do must focus our efforts on this target.  This does not preclude us from competing at every opportunity and aiming to win, in fact the more competitions the better, as this helps us develop our ability and then share skills with other members of the Federation.  Please continue with the friendly atmosphere that has developed, retain the fact that we are all fiercely competitive, but do not lose sight of our values and standards.

My next priority is for us all to actively encourage others to join the Federation.  Every new member not only brings in income through their joining subscription, but also results in us receiving more finance from centralised funding.  More funds in the Federation directly supports us fishing and importantly, helps us to develop and strengthen the team further.  Whilst we all can promote the Federation in our respective units and this is a crucial area where we must draw new, younger members, there are other opportunities too.  The Fishing For Forces events are an opportunity not to be missed and I will be working with Si to attempt to use these events as a membership recruiting ground.

My final priority is enhancing the sponsorship which we in the Federation can benefit from.  The tackle sponsorship we presently have is most welcome, but financial sponsorship through Team Army is particularly valuable to us too.  During the 2011 season we benefited from sponsorship through Team Army from Babcock, HP and WL Gore; my thanks go to all of our sponsors.  The 2012 season sees further sponsorship from Babcock and it was very good that Nic from Babcock could join us for the Spring match.  I am presently awaiting final confirmation of the sponsors via Team Army.  However, angling is very popular and our Army Team rightly has a strong reputation for its ability and most importantly, its competitiveness.   I thus intend to capitalise on this and will keep you updated of any sponsorship I secure; I hope to report some very positive news involving sponsorship from Deloitte in the next few weeks.

Mindful that this is turning into a rather long message from the new Chairman, I will aim to draw it to a close.  It is a pleasure to be the new Chairman and thank you for your support to date.  I wish you all the best for the coming season and look forward to seeing you on the water.

Tight lines

Richard
